Alumni Appeal 2010 - Meet Xavier Senior, Spencer Hughes!

Spirituality at Xavier High School - February 17, 2010

Spencer Hughes (X10)Hello! My name is Spencer Hughes and I’m a senior at Xavier. This year, I’ll be the featured student on this page. The idea is that you can learn about different aspects of Xavier through my eyes right here on Facebook. Each week, we’ll be posting a different feature to showcase the varied aspects of life at Xavier High. But first, you should know a little bit more about the person you’ll be following for the rest of the semester.

I attended St. Jude and Regis for elementary and middle schools, and have gone to Xavier for all four years. My mom, Marcia, and my dad, Scot, are very active in the Xavier community. My sister, Katie, was a 2008 grad and currently attends Iowa State. My plans for next year are uncertain, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be attending one of three universities: Iowa State, Northwestern, or Nebraska-Lincoln.

I keep myself pretty busy outside of the school day. I’m serving as President of the Student Senate, Vice President of the Thespian Troupe, and Secretary of National Honor Society. I was captain of the debate team and am also a Xavier Ambassador. I was a proud member of the Class 4A semifinalist football team, am now in Xhilaration, the varsity show choir, as we gear up for our four remaining competitions (and try to find somewhere to put our two Grand Championship trophies), participate on the speech team as I try to earn my fourth trip to All-State this year, and sing with Voce chamber choir.

In my (very limited) free time, I like to watch sports, play video games (my current favorite being Modern Warfare 2), and just hang out with friends or waste time on this wonderful website. I look forward to being able to document some of the rest of this semester for you! Check back soon for our next feature article.

What does my Alumni Appeal gift support?

Because tuition only covers a portion of the cost to educate a student, funds raised from the Alumni Appeal help bridge that gap by supporting the operating needs and funding special projects at Xavier High School. In addition, the phonathon helps update alumni records and provides an opportunity for alumni to catch up with one another.

How do I make a gift?

You can make a gift to the Alumni Appeal in one of three easy ways:

1. Donate online! Click here to make your donation through our secure, online donation website.
2. Donate through "Causes" on Facebook - and encourage your friends to do the same! Cause: LaSalle, Regis, Xavier, High School Alumni Appeal
3. Mail your gift to the Xavier Foundation at P.O. Box 10956, Cedar Rapids, IA 52410-0956
4. Call your gift in (using a credit card) to (319) 378-4571.

Why should I use "Causes" to make my gift?

By using the Causes feature on Facebook, you not only support Xavier High School and current students, like Spencer, but you can also let your friends know that the continued success of Catholic secondary education - namely - Xavier High School is important to you, and encourage them to show their support of Xavier as well!
