At Facebook, they believe people should have control over how they share their information and who can see it. People can only see the profiles of confirmed friends and the people in their networks. You can use their privacy settings at any time to control what others can see about your Facebook profile.
Facebook Privacy Settings
When using Facebook, it is best to keep in mind the level of personal information that you are comfortable sharing in a public forum. Your profile will only be accessible to those people and groups that you connect to in Facebook. When creating your profile, follow these step-by-step instructions on how to make your profile as private as possible:
Step 1: Hold the mouse over the "Settings" button in the top right hand corner of your profile, and click on "Privacy Settings."
Step 2: Click on the first option: "Profile." In the "Basic" tab, set each drop down box setting to "Only Friends" with the exception of: Photos, videos, wall posts, education info, and work info, which can all be set to "No one" by clicking on the "customize" option.
Step 3: In the "Contact Information" tab, click set the "Website" option to "Only Friends" and all others to "No One". Click "Save Changes." Click, "Privacy" to return to the main privacy screen.
Step 4: Click on the second option "Search." Set the "Search Visibility" box to "Only Friends" Uncheck the box which says: Create a public search listing for me and submit it for search engine indexing (see preview). Uncheck all four boxes underneath the sub-heading: How Can People Contact You? Click "Save Changes" button.
Step 5: Click on the third option: News Feed and wall. Uncheck all boxes. Click "Save Changes" button. Click "Privacy" to return to the main privacy screen.
Step 6: Click on the fourth option: Applications Read the overview carefully. In the "Settings" tab, check the box that says "Do not share any information about me through the Facebook API." Check the box under the sub-heading "Beacon Websites" which says: Don't allow Beacon websites to post stories to my profile. Click "Save Changes" button. Click "Privacy" to return to the main privacy screen.
